A clean grill is a happy grill. Burnt-on residue does not just look unappealing — it affects the taste of your food, causes sticking, and can harbour bacteria. The good news is that cleaning grill grates does not require expensive specialist products. Here are seven proven methods, from old-fashioned tricks to the one we recommend most.
1. The Newspaper Wrap
This is an old-school method that still works surprisingly well. While the grates are still warm (not scorching), wrap them in several layers of damp newspaper. The steam created softens the baked-on grease and food residue. Leave the wrapped grates for 30 minutes to an hour, then unwrap and wipe clean. Most of the grime lifts off with the paper.
2. The Aluminium Foil Ball
Scrunch a piece of aluminium foil into a tight ball roughly the size of a tennis ball. Using long-handled tongs for safety, scrub the warm grill grates with the foil ball. The crumpled edges act as a surprisingly effective abrasive that removes charred bits without damaging most grate materials. This is a great option when you have forgotten to bring a brush to the campsite.
3. The Lemon Half
Cut a lemon in half, spear it with a long fork, and rub the cut side across the warm grates. The citric acid helps break down grease and carbonised residue, and it leaves a fresh, clean scent. This method works best as a quick clean between cooking rounds rather than for heavily soiled grates.
4. The Bin Bag and Biotex Soak
For a deep clean, place the grates in a large bin bag, add warm water and a generous scoop of biological washing powder (such as Biotex). Seal the bag and leave it overnight — ideally for eight hours or more. The enzymes in the biological detergent break down proteins and fats at a molecular level. In the morning, rinse the grates with clean water. Even the most stubborn build-up comes away with minimal scrubbing.
5. Burn It Off
Prevention is easier than cure. After each cooking session, close the lid of your KLAUWE BBQ & Smoker Drum and let the remaining coals burn at high heat for 10–15 minutes. This incinerates most food residue, turning it into white ash that you can simply brush away once the grill has cooled. Make a habit of this and deep cleans become far less frequent.
6. The Grass Overnight Trick
This one sounds eccentric, but it works. Place the grill grates on the lawn overnight. The moisture from the morning dew, combined with natural enzymes in the grass, loosens stubborn grime. In the morning, give the grates a wipe and they come up remarkably clean. Not suitable for every garden situation, but worth trying if you have the space.
7. Stainless Steel Pan Scourer (Our Top Pick)
For everyday cleaning, a simple stainless steel pan scourer is hard to beat. They are cheap, widely available, and incredibly effective. Wet the scourer, add a drop of washing-up liquid if you like, and scrub the grates while they are still slightly warm. The stainless steel mesh removes baked-on residue quickly without leaving fibres behind.
Important note on wire brushes: Traditional wire grill brushes can shed bristles that end up in food — a genuine safety hazard. Stainless steel scourers are a safer alternative. They conform to the shape of the grate bars and clean more thoroughly than a flat brush head.
A Word About KLAUWE Grill Grates
The KLAUWE BBQ & Smoker Drum uses stainless steel grill grates, which means you can confidently use a stainless steel scourer without worrying about damaging the surface. Unlike chrome-plated or cast-iron grates, stainless steel does not require seasoning, will not rust, and can handle firm scrubbing. This makes maintenance straightforward — a quick scrub after each session keeps them in perfect condition.
How Often Should You Clean?
- After every cook: Burn off residue by closing the lid while coals are still hot. Follow up with a quick scrub using a stainless steel scourer.
- Monthly (during BBQ season): Do a deeper clean using the bin bag soak or newspaper wrap method.
- End of season: Give the grates a thorough clean, dry them completely, and store them in a dry place over winter.
A few minutes of maintenance after each session saves hours of heavy scrubbing later. Treat your grill grates well and they will reward you with better-tasting food, easier cooking, and years of faithful service.
